Opening reception. This exhibition features photographs, drawings and models designed and fabricated at UCLA by AUD students who participated in the traveling seminar, "Manifold Destiny II," led by faculty member Jason Payne. The seminar traveled to the lush garden island of Kaua'i, Hawaii, where they were immersed in the vegetal realm. Exposing architectural tectonics to botanical mechanics the subject of the course provided fresh insight into the accelerating discourse on conceptual and material plasticity in contemporary design. The trip allowed the class direct access to exotic plant material via guided and unguided hikes through tropical rain forest, and lectures and seminars by botanists at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Morphological principles learned in Kaua'i were integrated into a series of plastic forms that comprise the exhibition. The exhibit opens January 25th and closes February 24th.
