Opening reception. This exhibition features photographs, drawings and models designed and fabricated at UCLA by AUD students who participated in the traveling studio, "Extreme Porosity," a traveling studio led by faculty member David Erdman. The studio traveled to Istanbul Turkey examining mosques that reflect 15th and 16th century innovations in the use of minimal surfaces where extreme lightness, porosity and geometry are evidenced. Students explored massing, structural articulation, aperture formation and mood at Hagia Sophia Museum, Suleymaniye Complex, Selimiye Mosque (Edirne), Rustem Pasa Mosque (among others) where analysis and observations were utilized in the development of their projects for the studio. Exhibit opens February 27th and closes March 24th.
