Based on Dr. Nabokov's primary field research in the Great Lakes, the Northern and Southern Plains, and rural California over the past decade, this slide presentation uncovers a secret maneuver by which Native Americans have resisted the century-long U.S. government campaign to discourage and ban their traditions. Begun against the various assaults of the so-called "Civilization" period of the 1870s, this maneuver outfoxed the prying eyes of reservation officialdom, and continues today as a symbol and sanctuary for Indian identity and spirituality - the Roundhouse.
