exhibit: 'Gods and Monsters'
Peres Projects
(969 Chung King Road; Chinatown; downtown LA)
info: 213-617-1100; info@peres-projects.com
detail: Opening reception. As realism continues to invade many other art
forms, contemporary art further ponders the surreal and the spiritual.
A netherworld of supernatural beings and pagan figures from European history
haunt Peres Projects' Gods and Monsters exhibition, in which Dutch sculptor
Folkert de Jong, local watercolorist John Kleckner, and English painter
Andrew Mania have created a hyper-contemporary blend of fascinating psychedelia
and Victorian flamboyance. Mania shows portraits of young folk that harken
back to religious icons, while de Jong creates installations of dreamlike
figures in neon rubber and foam. Kleckner ties the loose ends together
with his forest spirits in ink and watercolor. While somewhat disparate
in tone, these three create a seemingly natural continuum of fantasy.
