exhibit: 'The Posters of Robert Rauschenberg'
LACMA (5905 Wilshire Boulevard;
Los Angeles)
info: 323-857-6010; publicinfo@lacma.org
detail: In addition to being at the forefront of some of the most important
artistic innovations of the 20th century – in painting, drawing,
photography, sculpture, and printmaking – Robert Rauschenberg has
been one of the most prolific poster artists of his time. This exhibition
will focus on Rauschenberg’s mass-editioned, fine art posters, which
are in many ways a culmination of that innovative spirit, presenting complex,
often pre-existing imagery within a framework of technical experimentation
that is central to Rauschenberg’s work. Since the pioneering achievements
of Jules Chéret and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the 1890s, posters
have been taken seriously as an art form. In addition to their inherent
function as advertisement and propaganda, they have successfully translated
the art movements of the 20th century into a popular medium of enormous
power. The more than 100 posters in this exhibition not only illustrate
the technical and artistic innovations of Rauschenberg’s work, they
also serve to chronicle the artist’s career. Through June 12th.
